John McDonaught

John is a veteran basketball man whose love and dedication has kept him involved in all aspects of the game.

His first love was officiating which he found highly motivating and challenging because of his competitive and perfectionistic nature. He officiated everything imaginable, from national level competitions - including five CIAU men’s championships, to international level competitions - the pre-Olympics and Olympics of 1976. He was viewed in the ‘70’s by many as one of Canada’s tops officials. His dedication and professionalism didn’t go unnoticed when he was the recipient of the Ted Earley Memorial Award from CABO for his outstanding service and unselfish dedication to the sport of basketball and basketball officiating in Canada. He retired from active officiating following the 1988-89 season.

John played a leading role in the development and expansion of officiating in Quebec. He was for many years the Interpreter and Examining Committee Chairperson for Board 106 of IAABO. He worked for nine years to structure and develop eighteen regions in Quebec which led to the creation of the Quebec’s first provincial wide board of officials in 1978, la Commission Provinciale des Arbitres (CPA). For many years he was Quebec’s Supervisor of Officials at the national level with CABO of which he was a founding member. He had two separate stints as Appointer and Evaluator of officials for the Quebec University Athletic Association. He was instrumental in setting up an official’s evaluation system for the CPA. He has given clinics and evaluated officials throughout the province as well as Canada. On many occasions, he has acted as supervisor at many National Championships. The Quebec Basketball Federation is proud to honor Mr. McDonaugh to the Temple de la Renommée du basketball québécois.
